A New Professional’s Twitter Presence

I read a post by Chris Brogan this morning: “My Twitter Presence”. The post lays out his strategy in sections and bulleted lists. At the end he mentions his interest in seeing posts written by readers on their Twitter methodology, encouraging them to leave links in the comments. I thought I’d take him up on the offer.

As a new professional in this field, my approach won’t be nearly as complex as Chris’, but perhaps it can give ideas to others just starting out.

My Account

I have only one—@Stacey_Alex. I recently changed my handle from @stacemiiister (a nickname bestowed on me in college) to better represent my actual name—Stacey Alexander. This has lead to creating a brand around Stacey Alex, with my blog, Facebook page, and YouTube channel. It’s even my custom URL on LinkedIn.

Another bonus to changing my handle is that it makes it easier for people to remember my name, as opposed to just calling me by my Twitter name.

The Tools

I’m behind the times on Twitter tools. However, at present I have about 84 followers, so I can easily reply to my @ messages through Twitter itself. I’m following 66. This means I can just as easily read the tweets that come through my feed without separating them into lists, although I do have one list specifically for social media people I follow.

My Twitter Goals

  • I use Twitter to learn information in social media.
  • I use Twitter to see what the pros are doing.
  • I use Twitter to share links to posts I find interesting.
  • I use Twitter to share information I learn.
  • I use Twitter to promote my own posts.
  • I use Twitter to connect with people in my field I would otherwise not know.

My Twitter Methods

  • Because I write about one post a day, I promote myself about the same amount.
  • The majority of my posts are RT’s or sharing post links of other social media professionals.
  • I send as many @ messages as I can to create more direct contact with those I follow.
  • I reply to nearly every @ message I receive. It’s work to keep these relationships going.
  • I still have a lot to learn.

How do YOU use Twitter?

I’m sharing my link on Chris’ post. Feel free to share yours here on my post too! I’d love to see them.
